DECEMBER

M2O...Mom's Morning Out...Every Thursday 9:30 until 11:15
Please join us! The more the merrier!
Dear Moms,

December already?! It feels like we just had our September kick-off, and here we are getting ready for Christmas! The sometimes harried feeling that we experience during the holidays can also be a great reminder to slow down and cherish the fleeting moments of infancy and toddlerhood. I know..."cherish"  toddlerhood? But the long winter days allow for many opportunities for cuddling, bonding and just being close and cozy. Sometimes that is just what our crazy little ones need--a hug or kiss--and mom getting one in return can be the best gift of the day.

Maybe we ought to approach the upcoming days of the winter season as we would open an advent calendar--day by day, each one revealing a gift, whether it be a hug, kiss, new word, new accomplishment, getting out of a bad habit, developing a good habit...let's look for the good in our little ones and enjoy the wonder of the season through their eyes. That is, after all, one of the best perks of being a parent of young ones.

Happy Holidays,
The Moms of M2O

felt slippersA simple craft, a luxurious gift...

It looks like this will be a winter where comments around the house like "Mom, I'm cold!" will be met with "Put on a sweater, sweetie!"

While conserving energy and keeping an eye on heating costs this season, why not do so in style and with love?

The November issue of Martha Stewart Living has a do-able project that would make a really great gift and keep tootsies of all sizes warm and toasty...handmade felt slippers.

Pick up a copy at the newsstand or library today (page 104) or go to marthastewart.com/felt-projects for the how-to. What a great gift for the gals and little ones in your life? Give it a try!

You could even go one "step" further in making these a luxurious and cozy gift by tucking your slippers in a basket with a coordinating lap blanket from somewhere like TJ Maxx or Home Goods, an interesting mug from The Neighborhood League or your local thrift shop, an assortment of teas and a good book.

It's fun to think "differently" in terms of gift giving, and now is as good a time as any. Enjoy!
women around fireplaceGirl's Night Out---Fireside Chat at George's!

We're taking over the couch in front of the fire at George's in Strafford and we'll be chatting about holiday plans, the kids and the man and this and that. Join us for a nibble or a sip...the gals who make the effort to get out the door on Girls Night are always glad they did. Join us on Thursday November 20th, at 8pm.

"Using a fan where babies sleep cuts SIDS risk by 72 percent"
Mon, Oct 6, 2008 (Reuters Health) - Using a fan in babies' rooms that have poor ventilation appears to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), according to a report in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Re-inhaling carbon dioxide has been hypothesized to contribute to SIDS. By allowing the pooling of carbon dioxide gas around an infant's nose and mouth during sleep, combined with inadequate ventilation in the room, may increase the risk of SIDS, the authors suggest.

To see if improving a room's ventilation could reduce the risk, Dr. De-Kun Li and colleagues conducted a population-based study involving 185 infants who died of SIDS and 312 infants with characteristics similar to those of the SIDS infants. Data on fan use and other aspects of the sleep environment were obtained through interviews with the infants' mothers.

Using a fan during sleep was linked with a 72 percent reduction in SIDS risk, Li and associates from Kaiser Permanente Northern California in Oakland report.

Further study showed that the benefits of using a fan were most pronounced in "adverse" sleep environments, such as a warm rather than a cool room, reducing the risk of SIDS by 94 percent.

Fans also reduced the impact of known risk factors for SIDS. For infants who slept on their stomach or their side, rather than on their back (the position recommended by the "Back to Sleep" campaign that started in 1994), a fan in the room reduced the risk by about 86 percent. Likewise, the risk was reduced by about 85 percent for infants who shared a bed with a person other than a parent.

The authors found that fan use only reduced the risk of SIDS in infants who were not using pacifiers. Prior research has linked pacifier use with a decreased risk of SIDS, the report indicates.

Although the importance of putting infants to sleep on their backs is the "paramount" message for parents, the use of a fan in the room of a sleeping infant appears to offer an easily available means of further reducing SIDS risk that can be readily accepted by parents and caretakers of various social and cultural backgrounds, Li's team concludes.
